About Ateneo de Manila History Ateneo de Manila began in 1859 when Spanish Jesuits established the Escuela Municipal de Manila, a public primary school established in Intramuros for the city of Manila. However, Ateneo's educational tradition embraces the much older history of the Jesuits as a teaching order in the Philippines. History Ateneo de Manila's main campus is located in Loyola Heights, Quezon City, housing the Basic Education Unit, the Loyola Schools, the School of Government, and a number of Jesuit and affiliated institutions. It is accessible via public transportation, with several jeepney lines plying the Katipunan Avenue route, and is a short walk from the LRT-2 Katipunan Station. Ateneo de Manila is open to everyone, regardless of background, belief, or economic status. Our students come from all over the Philippines and all over the world. There are athletes and mathletes; engineers and musicians; dancers and designers; scientists and artists; volunteers and entrepreneurs; and many more. The Ateneo de Manila University has established many international partnerships with universities and other organizations around the world. These are vital to creating opportunities for students to develop global outlook and competencies necessary to navigate a more interconnected world.
