Car Door tours. Review of Lightning Ridge Reviewed October 8, 2017 This is a very novel and quirky way to view the township and surrounding area and mines. There are 4 different tours you can do. We were in town for a few days, so we managed to do all four. The journey itself is half the fun! Driving To Lightning Ridge If coming from Queensland, it's a 7h30m drive from the border, passing the iconic Hebel Hotel. You'd be mad if you didn't stop in for a cold drink and look around. If you're coming from Sydney, it takes over 8hrs to drive there, but you can choose your own adventure.
Only spent a week in Lightning Ridge, we did all coloured car door self drive tours, went to Spark which was a fantastic outside cinema of the history of the opals. Only 80 kms from Hebal QLD, we enjoyed a great lunch at the pub, great meal also at the club in lightning ridge as well as at the pub in the scrub hilton. The rest of the car door tour winds its way through the 3 and 4 Mile Opal Fields. At the 3-Mile are the remains of a large open-cut mine.
