Governor Phillip fountain Fountain, Memorial Monument in the Royal Botanic Gardens commemorating Governor Arthur Phillip. Sculptor Achille Simonetti was commissioned to create the work by Sir Henry Parkes as part of the 1888 Centennial celebrations and it was unveiled on 22 June 1897 as part of the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee. Name Commemorates Phillip was a captain in the Royal British Navy and the first governor of New South Wales from 1788 until 1792. Below his 14.8 foot likeness are three reliefs illustrating education, justice and patriotism. They are encircled by bronze allegorical sculptures representing agriculture, commerce, mining and Neptune for navigation.

2020 PROJECT OVERVIEW The New South Wales Public Works Advisory (NSWPWA) engaged O'Sullivan Conservation to perform conservation works on the Governor Phillip Fountain in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney. The statue, also known as Governor Phillip Fountain, commemorates Captain Arthur Phillip (1738 - 1814) who was the first Governor of New South Wales from 1788 to 1792. The statue of Captain Phillip stands at the top of a rectangular marble pedestal which contains three bronze reliefs of Justice, Patriotism and Education. The Captain Arthur Phillips Fountain was erected in the Royal Botanical Gardens in 1897, by the Governor of New South Wales, Viscount Hampden, following the devastating fire which destroyed the Garden Palace and left a city in mourning. The first farm by European settlers on the Australian continent, at Farm Cove, was established in 1788 by Governor Phillip. Although that farm failed, the land has been in constant cultivation since that time, as ways were found to make the relatively infertile soils more productive.
