These are some recollections about a young Australian, Paul Large from Coolah in rural New South Wales who departed for the Vietnam War on his 21st birthday. He was killed in action 10 weeks later at the Battle of Long Tan on 18 August 1966. Paul was the only brother of five sisters.. Paul left Australia on the 6th of June 1966: his 21st birthday. 6RAR was based at Nui Dat in the Phouc Tuy province of South Vietnam and conducted cordon and search operations in the surrounding villages against the Viet Cong.

Paul Large was born on 6 June 1945 in Wellington, New South Wales. As a child he moved to Coolah with his family. Pte Paul Large from 12 Platoon fronts Major Harry Smith for punching a Lance Corporal. Large had been before Harry the Officer Commanding (OC) of D Coy three times previously. Harry was going to give him 21 days field punishment and 21 days loss of pay so Large asked for a court martial as he said he had good evidence and 4 witnesses to support. Born 8 June 1945, 21-year old Private Paul Large, a conscript from Coolah in New South Wales, Australia would have been 74 years old today. Paul Large is played by Daniel Webber in DANGER CLOSE: The Battle of Long Tan.

He said the soldier shown doing this noble deed (21-year-old Paul Large) died in the battle so he couldn't have told anyone about it. At the time, Dr Grandin was Flight Lieutenant Bob Grandin. One reads: "This Avenue was planted to perpetuate the memory of Private Paul Large, 6th RAR and formerly of Coolah and seventeen of his fellow servicemen who were killed in Vietnam on 18th August 1966". This plaque and the large stone on which it was affixed was provided by the Coolah Shire Council. Victor's good mate Pte. Paul Large, who also served in 12 Platoon, Delta Company, 6RAR in Vietnam, was one of those who never made it home.
