In military aviation, a wing is a unit of command. In most military aviation services, a wing is a relatively large formation of planes. In Commonwealth countries a wing usually comprises three squadrons, with several wings forming a group (around 10 squadrons). Each squadron will contain around 20 planes. Commonwealth usage Origins The 474th Fighter Bomber Wing (474th FBW) was established on 25 June 1952 assigned to Tactical Air Command (TAC). On 10 July 1952, the wing was activated at Misawa Air Base (IATA code MSJ), Japan, taking over the personnel and F-84G Thunderjets of the 116th Fighter-Bomber Wing.
