In general, corals coming from the genus Palythoa are classified as zoanthids with colonies that are embedded hard in the substrate and is often covered by its protruding polyps. Each polyp has an oral disc or mouth that is flat in shape and surrounded by a fringe of tentacles. Palytoxin is one of the most toxic organic substances found in the world, even in small quantities. Great care should be taken when with zoanthids, palytoxin can be fatal should it enters the blood stream. I recommend that all hobbyist (experienced or not) should wear personal protective equipment (PPE), when handling these beautiful soft corals.

Zoanthids go by so many different names it can be confusing. We often refer to them as zoos, zoas, zoanthids, palys or even polyps. They are all referring to the same thing, these bright colorful flowerlike corals. To frag a zoa or paly, our 'weapon' of choice is a stony coral cutter that allows you to cut in to the rock a remove the polyp along with a small piece of the rock.
