Alexander Young Jackson CC CMG RCA LL. D. (October 3, 1882 - April 5, 1974) was a Canadian painter and a founding member of the Group of Seven. Jackson made a significant contribution to the development of art in Canada, and was instrumental in bringing together the artists of Montreal and Toronto. Alexander Young Jackson was born on October 3, 1882 in Montreal, Quebec. His father, an unsuccessful businessman abandoned the family while Jackson was young. With five siblings, Jackson began work at age twelve for a Montreal lithography company to help his mother feed the family. Alexander Young Jackson was born the third of six children in a house on Mackay Street, Montreal in 1866. His father was absent for the majority of his life, and Jackson often thought of him as a failure. A.Y. Jackson did well at school and went to work at 12 years old for the British Engraving Company.
