According to historical records at The Harry Kirk Archives and Records Centre in Thunder Bay, The Crown purchased 270 acres of land. In 1967, Chippewa Park was the location of Fort William's first Day Camp. In 1974, the 10,000 square foot Chippewa zoo was demolished, while a five-year plan to construct a 500, 000 square foot animal sanctuary began.
