Clarke's Commentary Verse Ecclesiastes 1:2. Vanity of vanities — As the words are an exclamation, it would be better to translate, O vanity of vanities! Emptiness of emptinesses. True, substantial good is not to be found in any thing liable to change and corruption. The author referred to in the introduction begins his paraphrase thus: - Ecclesiastes 2:1 I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good!" But it proved to be futile. 1. ( Ecclesiastes 1:2) The Preacher's summary: Life is vanity, without meaning. "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.". a. Vanity of vanities: The Preacher begins his sermon with his first conclusion (though not his ultimate conclusion). Looking at life all around, he judges it to be vanity — nothing, useless, meaningless. Ecclesiastes begins with "All is vanity" ( Eccles. 1:2) and ends with the same declaration ( Eccles. 12:8 ). The book states powerfully and repeatedly that everything is meaningless ("vanity") without a proper focus on God. Ecclesiastes reveals the necessity of fearing God in a fallen and frequently confusing and frustrating world.
