Fan-cooled snowmobiles are sometimes overlooked as second-class snowmobiles, though that's hardly fair. Fan-cooled sleds have some definite advantages over their liquid-cooled counterparts, namely with low-maintenance, reliable engines and a lower price. All but Yamaha is in the fan-cooled market, and each company offers something a bit different. The fan-cooled two-stroke serves a unique need We've been trying to bury the old-fashioned 550cc fan-cooled two-stokes for the past few years now. It seems that we end up writing something about how this anachronistic powerplant no longer has a place in the world of high-tech, modern clean-burning, fuel efficient snowmobiling.

[Comparison] - PowerSportsGuide What is Better a Fan-Cooled or Liquid-Cooled Snowmobile? [Comparison] Written by ppguide Maintenance Snowmobile Many say that liquid-cooled snowmobiles are better than fan-cooled, as they are more powerful, more fuel-efficient, and last longer. Others argue that fan-cooled sleds have their own advantages. The Polaris 550 fan-cooled snowmobile engine use the CVTech Powerbloc 50 drive clutch and Invance driven clutch delivering a smooth engagement, enhanced low-speed drivability, and quieter operation. They have a maintenance-free design and are easy to tune while on the sled. 1. Cost One of the first things to consider when comparing the two types of cooling systems is cost. Fan cooled engines will be a lot cheaper than liquid cooled models. There are fewer components and parts, which helps keep the cost down. But fan cooled options do have limitations that might outweigh their cheaper cost. The Liberty 550 engine is fan-cooled to provide consistent power, regardless of snow conditions. The clutching is equipped for smooth engagement and enhanced low-speed drivability. The Right Tool for the Job The Voyageur 550 is available in two distinct versions. Choose from the nimble Voyageur 144 or added flotation of the Voyageur 155.

A fan-cooled snowmobile engine takes this design a step further. The cylinder heads have the same type of fins to catch airflow, but because of engine size, the fins alone can't bleed off heat fast enough to cool the engine quickly enough. The fix is to add a fan to the engine, increasing airflow to achieve proper cooling. Ski-Doo developed the new eDrive from its sister Can-Am ATV line and has expanded the eDrive concept to handle the all-new ACE 900 four-stroke. Ski-Doo's fan-cooled MXZ Sport 550 offers the most rear suspension travel at 15-inches. Arctic Cat's F570 combines older ACT Diamond Drive technology with the Suzuki-sourced 565cc twin. In recent years —okay, the last decade— the three, two-stroke sled manufacturers upgraded their fan-cooled engines to run cleaner and more efficiently. Most of these engines evolved from 440cc and 500cc twins to 550s or bigger. In Cat's case one of its remaining fan-cooled motors evolved into a 570cc, while a smaller 340cc version grew to. Surprisingly, you can still find fan-cooled snowmobiles on the market, which simply use a fan to keep their engines cool. Although both systems do a good job, they tend to overheat under certain conditions. In this post, we will discuss these cooling systems.

Two types of sleds, advantages and disadvantages to each. Which one's better? Is one better? In this video let's talk about how liquid cooling and fan coolin. The engine was a completely new design and became a prototype for the entire snowmobile industry. The engine is an axial fan-cooled design with the fan mounted at cylinder level and driven by a V-belt from the flywheel. The engine also has the cylinders "twisted" to each side to allow the transfer passages to overlap between the cylinders.
#1 · Nov 23, 2009 Inwas wondering what's then biggest / best and reliable fan cooled motormout there. Don't care of what brand. I have a 488 fan and it has 1350 mile on it. And want to go faster. I know lighter is faster in some cases. From the old world, the 550 Indy retains a fan-cooled two-stroke twin complete with dual Mikuni carburetors. No electronic fuel injection for this sled. You still need to flip a fuel enriching choke lever for cold starts. Electric start is useful, but optional.
