The park was created in 2000 and named after Wilbur Griffith who, with his wife Betty, donated a portion of their estate to The City of Calgary to be set aside as a nature preserve. Griffith Woods is classified as a Special Protection Natural. Griffith Woods Park's rich history dates back to the early 20th century. Originally owned by William Roper Hull, a prominent businessman in Calgary, the land was used for agricultural purposes and remained in private ownership for several decades. However, in the 1990s, the City of Calgary recognized the importance of preserving this pristine.
