(MV Frances Barkley) A long-running Vancouver Island ferry service is bringing back Sunday sailings this August, nearly one year since the service was saved from sudden closure. In August 2021, Lady Rose Marine Services was set to make its very last sailing, after 75 years in business, following difficulties the company faced due to COVID-19. The 1958 built MV Frances Barkley is owned and operated by Lady Rose Marine Services in Port Alberni. The ship and its crew know every inch of the Alberni Inlet including the areas through the Broken Group Islands and all the way to Ucluelet BC. That means the MV Frances Barkley passenger and cargo vessel will continue operating between Port Alberni and Bamfield. New owners have stepped up to ensure MV Frances Barkley continues operation. Business partners Greg Willmon and Barrie Rogers, who own Devon Transport along with a group of rental and leasing companies, announced Monday, Aug. 16 that Lady Rose Marine Services has accepted their offer to purchase the business.

The MV Uchuck departs from Gold River, where you will stay two nights, and will take you through beautiful Nootka Sound to. The Frances Barkley is an older ship but is well maintained. The seats are very hard for a long trip, and the bathrooms are smelly. They need to clean them better and put some air fresheners in there. There is a small galley selling food. Sechert Lodge is nice and the manager (lady) is very friendly, but it is not luxury accommodation.
