Celebrating 200 Years, Cork's Roches Point Lighthouse Opens to Public
The ship arrived at Roches Point, the outer anchorage of the harbour, at 11.30am on 11th April 1912. The last 123 passengers boarded ferries from the White Star Line pier in Queenstown which took them out to the liner. On 11 th April 1912 at 11.30am RMS Titanic dropped anchor in Queenstown, Ireland at Roches Point outer anchorage. Today named Cobh, the port was the luxury liner's final port of call on its maiden journey, before setting sail on the longest leg of the voyage to New York, USA. Heartbreak Pier, as it was dubbed by locals in Cobh, was the departure point for generations of Irish emigrants from the then Queenstown, including the 123 people who boarded the SS Titanic on. From here, follow signs for Roches Point (you'll pass Trabolgan on the way). The unsigned large car park for White Bay will be on your right. It is a good (steepish in parts) walk to the bay but well surfaced all the way down. From the car park, turn right for Roches Point which is just a couple of kilometres away.
