Welcome to North Sydney! Greetings from our open concept, state-of-the-art North Sydney terminal, where impeccable sight lines, and panoramic views of vessels and the Atlantic Ocean await. The terminal is fully accessible. Any customers requiring a wheelchair may request one for use while on Marine Atlantic property. North Sydney to Port aux Basques: This is the most popular option for those taking a ferry to Newfoundland. This ferry runs year-round (although storms can cause delays), travels 96 nautical miles, and takes about 6-7 hours. The ferry basically connects the Trans-Canada Highway of Nova Scotia with the Trans-Canada Highway of Newfoundland. Marine Atlantic operates the ferries between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, including Canada's largest ferry, the MV Caribou. The boats leave from North Sydney, a small community on the northern tip of Cape Breton island. It takes 5-1/2 to 7 hours for the trip to Port-aux-Basques, on the west coast of Newfoundland.
