Three Sisters Lamp The Three Sisters Lamp is in direct line with the steeple of Trinity Church, so that sea captains were able to navigate their way safely into Saint John Harbour at night. Three red gas lamps, visible from three miles seaward, were stationed at the end of Prince William Street. No one can say why the Three Lamps light is better known as The Three Sisters. Nevertheless, local residents know the landmark by its nickname and have many stories to explain it. Some say that three faithful sisters waited here for a first glimpse of the ship bearing their seafaring husbands home.

Located in St. Patrick Park at the end of Prince William Street, the Three Sisters Lamp used to guide mariners into the bustling seaport. Erected in 1842, the first light was a single oil lamp. Seven years later, three red gas lamps replaced the single lamp. The grassy square, with its ornamental "Three Sisters" lamp replica of old-time navigational lights, was re-named St. Patrick's Square during the 1967 Canadian Centennial, to honour citizens of Irish descent.
