The "Kommandantur" (command station) was the first permanent building of the airfield, built in 1912. It was the main´ administrative building and also housed numerous workshops. and was flanked by two wooden hangars. Today, the building contains an exhibition on the history of Schleissheim Airfield and the Flugwerft. Flugwerft in Oberschleißheim is part of the Deutsches Museum, though it is significantly younger than its parent institution on Museumsinsel. Since 1992, visitors have been able to come here to view historical and modern air and space travel exhibits, from exceptional engines and powertrains to a flight simulator. The Flugwerft was opened in 1992 as the first branch of the Deutsches Museum and has since become one of the largest and most important aviation museums in Germany. A good 100,000 visitors come to Oberschleißheim every year. The museum is located on the edge of the oldest operating airfield in Germany.
