A prolific and highly influential painter and sculptor, the artist recasts art historical motifs in contemporary settings, often exploring experiences of community and isolation in today's world. Encompassing large-scale, monumental paintings alongside sculptures, monoprints, animation and drawings, the exhibition showcases the extraordinary range and formal inventiveness that characterises her practice.
Nicole Eisenman was born in Verdun, France, but spent her childhood in the leafy affluent suburban setting of Scarsdale, New York. She studied fine art at the Rhode Island School of Design, during which she spent a year in Rome. There she became interested in Renaissance painting. At once absurd and funny, critical and incisive, sexy and raunchy, strange and discomforting, Nicole Eisenman's work crystallizes the complexity of the human predicament. Eisenman, who uses non-binary pronouns, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1987 and promptly moved to New York's Lower East Side, where they participated.
