The famous artist Joan Miró lived in Mallorca from 1956 until his death 1983. During these years he painted a large portion of his famous works. After Miró's death, his home and studio transformed into the Miró museum, which today is part of the Fundació Pilar I Joan Miró. The Fundació Miró Mallorca ( Miró Mallorca Foundation) is a museum in Palma de Mallorca, dedicated to the work of the artist Joan Miró. It comprises a main building exhibiting 6000 works donated by the artist, including paintings and sculptures, a library, a sculpture garden, Miró's studio Sert, and the Finca Son Boter. La Fundació Miró Mallorca és una institució cultural a Mallorca que permet descobrir l'art de Joan Miró i estudiar el procés creatiu en el lloc on l'artista va residir i treballar durant gairebé 30 anys. In 1992, the Joan Miró museum opened in a new, exciting building designed by the Spanish architect, Rafael Moneo. The museum is an extension of Joan Miró's first workshop, Son Boter, and the newer workshop, Taller Sert. The beautiful gardens are home to some of his larger sculptures.

The works are part of the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca's collection. The Moneo Building, the headquarters of Fundació Miró Mallorca, opened its doors to the public on December 19th 1992. Designed by well-known architect Rafael Moneo, winner of the 1996 Pritzker Arquitecture Prize, it was built following the donation of land by Pilar Juncosa, Miró's widow, together with 42 works of art that were then auctioned by Sotheby's to raise money for the centre.
