It's Zwave support was actually amazing but was a different thing entirely written by a guy not affiliated with the project. I found it hard to keep interested in it and I hated Java.

Agreed, although I find OpenHAB much harder for new users, but that could just be the way my brain things about things, even the way they've named certain key components doesn't make sense in my brain sometimes but could be my way of thinking! It can hopefully only get better, especially in Home Assistants case! Besides Home-Assistant, openHAB (Java based), FHEM and numerous other platforms, ioBroker offers a possibility to connect several systems.
