Situated on Rat-Beil-Straße in Frankfurt's North End district, the New Jewish Cemetery is the final resting place of many famous Frankfurt personalities, buried here between 1828 and 1929. The cemetery documents the various eras and the division of Frankfurt's Jewish community. The tombstones that had been removed to Rat-Beil-Strasse were returned and stacked up along the inside of the cemetery wall, as their original location could no longer be determined. The tombstones of some well-known personalities such as Mayer Amschel Rothschild and Rabbi Nathan Adler were grouped together in a corner at the southern wall. Under the Nazi regime, in 1942, 4,666 gravestones were demolished and piled up as rubble for removal. Some of these stone heaps can still be seen today. 175 gravestones were removed, but not crushed, and ended up in the newer Jewish cemetery on Rat-Beil-Strasse.
