Whitechapel is a district in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets in the East End of London, located 3.4 miles (5.5 km) east of Charing Cross. The district is primarily built around Whitechapel High Street and Whitechapel Road, which extend from the City of London boundary to just east of Whitechapel station. The Whitechapel district gets its name from two streets that run down the middle of the area: Whitechapel High Street and Whitechapel Road. Both streets are named for a small chapel that was destroyed during the Blitz in London during World War II.
