The BMW Z3 Roadster (E36/7) was the first, most basic model. It originally came out in September 1995 with a choice of either 1.8 litre or 1.9 engine engines. It could also be ordered with a hardtop roof, fitted onto specially placed mounting points. A year later in 1996, an E36/7 with a 2.8 litre engine became available. In 1997, the 2.8 arrived to counter any criticism of the Z3 being a bit slow. The six-cylinder 193 bhp 2.8 added vented front brakes and a wider rear track as well as fatter 16-inch wheels (17s were an option) with wider rear wings.
