Charles Town on the Ashley River was not the first Charles Towne in the vast area called Carolina stretching from north Florida to Virginia. Charlestown's most prominent history occurred during the colonial period and to just after the Revolutionary War (1742-1790). During the Revolutionary War, Charles Town was a major supply depot for the Continental Army. Charles Washington laid out and established Charles Town in 1786/7 on land he inherited from his older brother, Lawrence Washington. He divided 80 acres into plots and laid out the road network with streets named after his family. He also designated the town center at the intersection of George and Washington Streets.
