The Battle of Cape Spartel was a naval battle on 29 September 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. The engagement took place between two Nationalist cruisers and two Republican destroyers, and broke the Republican blockade of the Strait of Gibraltar, securing the naval supply route to Spanish Morocco for the Nationalists early in the war. Cape Spartel is located on the coastal area of Tangier with cliffs, beaches and forests with autochthonous vegetation which form part of the Cape Spartel Nature Reserve. It is one of the land masses which delimit the Strait of Gibraltar on the African side and where an imaginary line is drawn where the Mediterranean and Atlantic waters meet. Cap spartel is the exact point where the sea and the ocean meet. It's an unmissable attraction when visiting Tanger, however it's not something that special. The lighthouse can be visited inside and it actually seems pretty nice, but our guide didn't recommend it, so we didn't. Visited May 2023. Bon appétit.
