This is a highly strategic and symbolic setting. During the Second World War, and notably during the Battle of France, Wimereux's Fort de la Crèche was the site of fierce fighting. It was on 23 May1940, after the arrival of tanks, that the battery's sailors surrendered. La Crèche coastal battery then passed into the hands of the Kriegsmarine. It was renamed "Marine Küsten Batterie Crèche I". The Fort of the Crèche is a coastal battery of the Séré de Rivières system, whose construction was completed in 1879. It is near Wimereux, in the Pas-de-Calais on the tip of Pointe de la Crèche. It is built on the remains of a Napoleonic defense system consisting of Fort Terlincthun and a sea fort, opposite the tip of the cape, of which only the foundations remain. The Germans then occupied the site, building bunkers on top of the old French platforms and integrating it into the "Atlantic Wall".
