The Pont-de-Nieppe baths were set up in a disused bleach works on the banks of the River Lys by 6th Division, who were billeted in Armentières during the winter of 1914-1915. The British paid a rental for the use of the building* (really!), turning the huge vats, used before the war for bleaching linen yarn, into baths, hot water provided by. Nieppe is a village 4 kilometres north-west of Armentieres on the road to Bailleul. The Communal Cemetery is east of the village, some 500 metres to the north of the main Armentieres-Bailleul road. Visiting information Wheelchair access to this cemetery is possible with some difficulty. Nieppe, like Pont-de-Nieppe, was occupied by the men of 1st Hampshire Regiment on 16th October 1914, and remained behind British lines until the Germans took the village on 11th April 1918. The first British burial in the communal cemetery was made on 15th October 1914, and the last on 7th September 1918, four days after the 29th Division. The bridge at Pont-de-Nieppe was siezed by the 1st Hampshires on 16 October 1914 and the village then stayed within the Allied lines until 11 April 1918, when the 34th Division were driven out of neighbouring Nieppe after hard fighting.
