1 You probably want to be using X-Ray mode instead of Wireframe. You can do this by hitting Alt+Z to toggle it on/off or by hitting the circled button in the image below. Using Z-transparent and playing with alpha values only makes objects transparent in the Rendered scene (i.e. the jpeg file), but in the view ports (aka 3D windows) the objects don't become transparent.
