The oldest cafè on our list is Hadik, opened in 1911 and became very popular in the 20s. It was the favourite place of many famous writers like Frigyes Karinthy, Árpád Tóth or Jenő Rejtő. 1. Cafe Gerbeaud With chandeliers on the ceiling, gilded stucco on the walls and marble counters and floors, café-cum-confectioner Café Gerbeaud is definitely no Starbucks. In fact, having opened in 1858, it ranks among the oldest classic cafes in Budapest. Alexandra Bookcafe is probably the most beautiful of all confectionaries in Budapest, and our expectations were high as we prepared to taste the cakes and the drinks. We were lucky to get a free table as the place was almost packed - but our jury was unfortunately not too impressed by the quality of what they were later served.
