David Gahan ( / ɡɑːn / GAHN; born Callcott; 9 May 1962) is an English singer, best known as the lead singer of electronic band Depeche Mode since their formation in 1980. His long, torturous history of substance abuse, attempted suicide in 1995, and actual clinical death for two minutes in 1996 tends to grab the media's eye, as well. But much like the subtler layers of Depeche Mode's own music, it's the quiet background that deserves equal acclaim. The following album Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993) was also a success, though the band's internal struggles during recording and touring resulted in Wilder's departure in 1995. The band returned to the trio lineup of Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher, with the album being released in 1997.
