Ogham is an alphabet which was traditionally used to write Primitive Irish ~1,600 years ago, the earliest known form of Gaelic. As it is known only from fragments inscribed on stone, it is impossible to accurately translate all names, words and phrases into Primitive Irish and then into ogham. The Ogham (or Ogam) language/script is based on an early Irish alphabet composed mainly of 20 basic symbols corresponding to certain letters of the classical Latin alphabet. There are sometimes other rare symbols that appear in manuscripts that are combinations of letters.

Ogham (/ ˈ ɒ ɡ əm / OG-əm, Modern Irish: [ˈoː(ə)mˠ]; Middle Irish: ogum, ogom, later ogam [ˈɔɣəmˠ]) is an Early Medieval alphabet used primarily to write the early Irish language (in the "orthodox" inscriptions, 4th to 6th centuries AD), and later the Old Irish language (scholastic ogham, 6th to 9th centuries). There are roughly 400 surviving orthodox inscriptions on stone. The Ogham stones available to scholars for study clearly support the interpretation that Ogham was a monument script, that is, a script used to memorialize a dead person. A typical example of a translated Ogham stone inscription is this one from a stone on Inchagoill Island, Galway: The stone of Lugnaedon son of Limenuch.
