The Opel Ascona is a large family car ( D-segment in Europe) that was produced by the German automaker Opel from 1970 to 1988. It was produced in three separate generations, beginning with rear-wheel-drive and ending up as a front-wheel drive J-car derivative. The Opel Ascona B was launched at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show, and was designed to fight the Ford Taunus (Cortina) head-to-head, and did so by offering a similar package, but to a higher level of quality. The highlight was the Ascona B 400, with which Walter Röhrl became World Rally Champion in 1982. The year before, Opel replaced the Ascona B with the new Ascona C after more than 1.5 million units. For the first time in Opel's history, it had front-wheel drive and was therefore no longer suitable for rally events. The success of Opel Ascona continued with the model Ascona B: its production took place from 1975 to 1981 and was a real best-seller accounting to 1.5 million vehicles sold, becoming the most successful model of Opel of any times. Opel Ascona B shared partially its basic structure and technical components with the model Opel Manta.
