Fraser's Photinia is a large, evergreen shrub or small tree that grows up to 20' tall. This plant blooms in mid-spring, after P. serratifolia and before P. glabra. This plant is also intermediate in size between the two. Fraser Photinia's fetid blooms are offensive to many people. Photinia x fraseri 'Camilvy' ultimately grows to around 4m x 4m making it an excellent specimen tree for a small suburban garden. However it performs best as a medium to large hedge with an annual prune in early to mid spring. Follow this with a feed of Osmocote slow release fertiliser. Plant as a hedge at 1m spacings. How to grow photinia. Photinias are low-maintenance shrubs or small trees, many of which have colourful foliage displays in spring/summer or autumn. They also produce clusters of small white flowers, followed by red berries. The most popular cultivar, Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin', is prized for its striking ruby-red new foliage. Photinia Fraseri Camilvy is an upright Photinia that tends to have a richer deep red shade than others such as the ever-popular Red Robin. The foliage is typical photinia oval with corrugated lines that fade to mid-green after the initial red flush has matured.

Photinia are evergreen shrubs of East Asian origin. The fraseri hybrids were initially selected by Fraser nurseries (Alabama, 1955) and are a spontaneous cross of glabra (Japan) x serrulata (syn serratifolia, China). 'Red Robin' is the first bright colored selection in these hybrids, made in New Zealand in the 70's. Photinia × fraseri 'Camilvy' 'Camilvy' is similar to 'Red Robin', with slightly deeper, more coppery-red new growth. It reaches about 3m tall and is slightly more tolerant of light shade.
