Strelitzia Nicolai, or another name for the giant white bird of paradise, is a type of banana plant with upright woody stems. They are capable of reaching a height of 20 feet. It's an evergreen variety and is a tropical plant. There are three strelitzia species: reginae, juncea and nicolai, and all are used to make a dramatic impact in the garden, as hardy foliage plants or to create a tropical-look garden indoors and outdoors. Strelitzia Nicolai is a more dramatic choice in the garden, growing to 4 or 6 metres tall. There are fewer leaves, but they are much larger. The flowers are the same shape as Reginae, but in moody tones of dark blue and white. Try them as a lovely tropical screen. Strelitzia are beautiful plants that can be successfully grown inside; however, the biggest drawbacks are their size; they can grow 5 to 6 feet tall. These plants need 3 to 5 years to mature before they flower. On the larger S.nicolai the leaves do tend split in the wind, and other than grow the plant in a protected position you can't do much about that. The same problem can occur with Strelitzia reginae, however the leaves are smaller and tougher, so the splitting is not as exaggerated. The leaves on both varieties can also turn brown along the edges.

Streliztiza nicolai: This variety makes for a great tropical screen. It is characterised by its large size which sees it grow up to 6 metres tall.
