The Type 3 Squareback or Variant was launched in 1962. The Squareback was introduced as a highly practical family car. The Variant is very spacious, a mix between the VW Beetle and Bus. Model: VW Squareback or Variant Manufactured: from 1961 to 1973 Fuel type: petrol Engine size: 1500cc and 1600cc Engine type: air-cooled The 1600-cc engine was enhanced with standard electronic fuel injection (a world first in a mass-produced economy car!) in U.S. models for 1968. The original swing axle rear suspension was replaced with independent semi-trailing arms across the line in 1969, and an automatic transmission became optional. The Volkswagen 1600 engine (known as a Type 126) featured a displacement of 1584 cm, a bore of 85.5 mm, a stroke of 69 mm, and a compression ratio of 7.7:1. When it comes to buying components for this engine or just looking for its history, there's a lot of information to know. Power is produced by an overhead valve, 1.6 litre naturally aspirated 4 cylinder motor, with 2 valves per cylinder that provides power and torque figures of 53 bhp (54 PS/40 kW) at 4000 rpm and 110 N·m (81 lb·ft/11.2 kgm) at 2200 rpm respectively.
