This contrasts with alphabets, which provide graphemes for both consonants and vowels. The term was introduced in 1990 by Peter T. Daniels. [4]

The hamzaŧ is a character representing the glottal stop, a sound which is produced by blocking and then releasing the airflow in the vocal tract. There is no letter representing the glottal stop in English, although the sound itself is common. This is totally true, but just to quibble: FYI, the plural is nequdot . Here's how I've come to understand the differences: (Pure) abjads don't indicate vowels at all. Alphasyllabaries mark all vowels, but don't have an inherent vowel in the absence of a diacritic. Abugidas have inherent vowels in the absence of a diacritic. I'm curious to know if people understand or use these terms differently.
