Alexander Arthur Van Halen ( Dutch pronunciation: [aːlɛkˈsɑndər fɑn ˈɦaːlə (n)]; born May 8, 1953) is an American musician who was the original drummer and a co-founder of the rock band Van Halen, which was formed in 1972 by Van Halen and his younger brother Eddie under the name "Mammoth" before adding Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth in 1974. The death of Eddie Van Halen on October 6, 2020, marked the end of the legendary band that bears his last name. The group was infamous for their myriad lead vocalist changes — David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar had multiple stints with Van Halen, and the less said about Gary Cherone's time as frontman, the better.
