Initial models were powered by inline-four engines, using either a carburettor or fuel-injection. A year after launch, the first model powered by a straight-six engine was introduced. Alpina created five variants based on the E28 BMW 5 Series, starting in 1981. The three main variants were the B7 Turbo, the B9 3.5, and the B10 3.5. Each of these cars featured a unique engine, with the B7 and B9 recieving mid-life upgrades, these updated cars are known as the B7 Turbo/1, and the B9 3.5/1.

The BMW 528i sensor is completely different from the Alpina one, which is out of production way way back, and no such spare part is currently available from Pierburg or Alpina.
