Untuk membantu pemerintah Kepala Burung mengadopsi pendekatan PBE ini, tiga organisasi lingkungan (NGO) yaitu TNC, WWF dan CI telah bekerja dengan mitra lokal sehak tahun 2001 untuk informasikan. Pada kawasan Kepala Burung, formasi batuan yang tertua yaitu Formasi Kemum yang tersingkap di sebelah timur Kepala Burung yang dikenal dengan Tinggian Kemum, serta di sekitar Gunung Bijih Mining Access (GBMA) di sebelah Barat Daya Pegunungan Tengah. Formasi ini didominasi oleh batuan metamorf low grade dan tersusun oleh beberapa jenis batuan.
