The Leichter Panzerspähwagen (German: "light armoured reconnaissance vehicle ") was a series of light four-wheel drive armoured cars produced by Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1944. Development history The Sd.Kfz.221 was first developed in 1934 and was a completely new design with many modern features at that time. It was meant for frontline service, acting as a reconnaissance vehicle together with radio-equipped vehicles. However, with thin armor and armed with only a machine gun, it could do very little in combat, even in 1939.

A In Detail The Leichter Panzerspähwagen Sd.Kfz.222 Ausf.A, also known as the Sd.Kfz.222, was a German armoured car used extensively during World War II. Designed for reconnaissance missions, the Sd.Kfz.222 was known for its speed and agility, making it a valuable asset for the German military. From 1942 onwards, the SdKfz 223 line was given a more powerful engine for improved performance as well as a more robust chassis (producing the Ausf. B variant). Its armor was improved along the frontal facings to 30mm thickness. Dimensions included a length of 4.56 meters with a width of 1.95 meters and height of 2 meters. Known as the Leichter Panzerspähwagen series, this was a group of German light-armored vehicles intended for use in reconnaissance missions during the Second World War. These vehicles were created because there was a need for dependable vehicles that were able to run on various grades of fuel and could perform well on all types of terrain. The SdKfz 222 was an up-gunned form mounting a combination 20mm cannon with 7.92mm machine gun in its gun emplacement while the SdKfz 223 became a Command and Communications (CC2) vehicle fielding a collapsible antenna frame over its hull superstructure.
The German Kfz.13, although an initial success as the first serially produced armored car, lacked armor and any fighting capabilities and was never intended. The Leichter Panzerspähwagen Sd. Kfz. 221 became the basis for all further development of lightly armored reconnaissance cars, starting its production as early as 1935. This light-weight vehicle was designed to run on different grades of fuel, to provide effective anti-infantry fire support and, most importantly, to perform well in off-road.
