Sarah Island is Tasmania's oldest convict settlement and reputedly one of the severest penal establishments in the history of transportation to Australia. Ruins of the gaol At the beginning of 1822, the Macquarie Harbour Penal Station was established, with Sarah Island as its base. The convicts sent here were mostly male and were usually people who had committed further crimes while serving their original sentences in Van Diemen's Land. We had a great cruise all day - Macquarie Harbour, Gordon River (with a viewing of the salmon and other fish farms), then to Sarah Island. We disembarked there and went on a very good guided tour.
