In the '60s, Biba was the place to shop in London and had the price tag of Primark. But unlike Primark, the clothes looked designer and nobody shopped in their pyjamas. She opened the Biba shop in 1964 on Abingdon Road in London, the coolest, grooviest, sexiest clothes shop the world had - and, perhaps without exaggeration, has - ever seen. Mick Jagger came to ogle the panda-eyed girls, the décor was dark, decadent and delicious, the goings-on were legendary and the clothes so hip it hurt. Hulanicki worked as a fashion illustrator after studying at Brighton Art College in the late 1950s.
