What Are Burma Sapphires? This gemstone is a form of the mineral corundum, which contains aluminum oxide, iron, vanadium, magnesium, chromium, and titanium. Sapphires can actually be found in a variety of colors, including green, yellow, purple, pink, orange, and brown. However, blue sapphires have always been the most popular and desired. In the last five years, fine Burmese blue sapphires from the Baw Mar area of Mogok have reached the market. The faceted stones typically show a strong pleochroism from greenish to violetish blue when viewed perpendicular and parallel to the c-axis, respectively, with medium to strong saturation and medium to dark tone. Sapphires from Burma can also come in different colors like pink, yellow, green, purple and even black. The mines of Mogok also produce other colors of sapphires like the padparadscha, which is a very rare color of sapphire that has a delicate pinkish-orange color. Price. On average, a one-carat Burma Blue Sapphire can cost anywhere from $2,000.
