Away from the Flock is one of a group of sculptures collectively entitled Natural History, that Hirst initiated in 1991 with what was to become one of his most famous works, a tiger shark floating in a giant formaldehyde-filled tank, entitled The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Somebody Living (reproduced Damien Hirst, pp.120-1). Its title, 'Away from the Flock', is a term we associate with religion, specifically Christianity, - "to leave the flock" is to leave behind the protection of the church. Hirst draws on precedents in earlier British art.

About Away from the Flock Damien Hirst's 1994 sculpture Away From The Flock features a preserved lamb in a tank of formaldehyde. The title references the idea of leaving behind the protection of the church in Christianity, while Hirst sees it as a self-portrait celebrating artistic individuality. Away from the Flock features a lifeless sheep suspended in formaldehyde within a glass-walled tank. The sheep on display represents the limits of preservation, its inability to evade death. The work forces us to address our own ultimate mortality, resulting in emotional, empathetic responses.
