The Biobío River (also known as Bío Bío [2] or Bio-Bio [3] [4]) is the second largest river in Chile. It originates from Icalma and Galletué lakes in the Andes and flows 380 km to the Gulf of Arauco (in Spanish) on the Pacific Ocean . The major tributaries of the river are the Malleco and the Laja. Biobío, región, central Chile, bordering Argentina to the east and fronting the Pacific Ocean to the west. It was given its present boundaries in 1974 and includes the provincias of Ñuble, Concepción, Arauco, and Biobío. The islands of Santa María, in the Bay of Arauco, and Mocha, 14 miles (23 km) offshore, are part of Arauco provincia. The Bio Bio Region is bounded to the east by the Andes Mountain Range, creating a dramatic backdrop perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
