After the expiration of the Rollin White patent (April 3, 1869), Colt 1851 (and 1861 Navy) Revolvers were converted or newly made to fire .38 rimfire or centerfire cartridges, the Colt Model 1851 Richards- Mason Conversion by the Colt factory. Use The Colt Model 1861 Navy saw usage on the battlefields of the American Civil War and, like the Colt Model 1851 Navy before it, also saw actions in the violent American expansion into the West. This Colt model, however, did not see production numbers to match its predecessor's 250,000 manufactured. The Frazier History Museum in Louisville, Kentucky, exhibits a remarkable collection of famous Western firearms. This includes a cased pair of heavily engraved, gold- and silver-plated, elephant-ivory-gripped, .36-caliber Colt Model 1861 Navy revolvers believed to be owned by Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer. It incorporated the "creeping" or ratchet loading lever and round barrel of the .44-caliber Army Model of 1860 but had a barrel one half inch shorter, at 7.5 inches. Total production was 38,000 revolvers. The 7½-inch forged steel barrel, with its seven-groove, left-hand twist rifling, is finished in a gloss black, as is the cylinder. This latter has a roll engraved scene depicting a naval battle between the Texas navy and that of Mexico.
Essentially a streamlined version of the Model 1851 Navy, the six-shot, .36 caliber Colt M1861 Navy was manufactured from 1861 through to circa 1873 in a serial range from 1 through to approximately 38843 (and roughly 28,000 by the end of the war.
