Dandong Dandong ( simplified Chinese: 丹东; traditional Chinese: 丹東; pinyin: Dāndōng; lit. "Red East"), formerly known as Andong, is a coastal prefecture-level city in southeastern Liaoning province, in the northeastern region of People's Republic of China . Dandong is a prefecture-level municipality ( shi ), and the territory under its administration includes not only the municipal area but also several counties occupying the entire North Korean border zone of Liaoning. The Yellow Sea is off its south edge and the modern city Dalian is just adjacent to the city to the northeast. Located in the southeast of Liaoning Province, Dandong is west of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) with the Yalu River in between, east of Anshan City, south of Benxi City and north of the Yellow Sea. Dandong City is 220 kilometers away from the provincial capital of Shenyang, and it takes about three hours by bus to be there.

The Bridge to North Korea. Built over the 1930s and '40s when Japan was occupying Korea, this majestic Dandong bridge is one of the few ways you can get in or out of North Korea. Interestingly, you see the remains of an older bridge (the "Broken Bridge") right alongside it, spanning about half of the Yalu River.
