After the pair met in "The Dragon's Call," Gaius first saw Merlin use his magic when he saved him from a dangerous and possible fatal fall. Although Merlin denied using magic, he once again exposed his magic when Gaius tricked him into preventing a bucket of water from spilling off the table. Leaving Merlin for a while we come back to Gwen, the knights, and Gaius left in Camelot. I don't think that Gaius would live much longer as he would now feel he'd played his part by mentoring.
