Vivace assai This symphony is the second of four by Michael Haydn to include a slow introduction before the first movement (the others are Symphonies Nos. 21, 27, and 30 ). All four were written between 1778 and 1785 and attached to symphonies cast in three movements (without minuets ). References Haydn 's Symphony No. 22 in E flat major ("Philosopher") is a good example of a work that bridges the late Baroque and early Classical styles. Here Haydn employs the Baroque sonata da chiesa form (i.e. movements in a slow-fast-slow-fast scheme) while making use of a characteristically Classical harmonic language and phrase structure. Issued as Parlophone SW 8122 and SW 8123, in automatic sequence only. This YouTube music video features a captivating performance of Haydn's Symphony No. 22 in E-Flat Major, also known as 'Der Philosoph'. The orchestra delivers.
The Symphony No. 22, nicknamed "The Philosopher" (on a manuscript from the 1790s, again, not coming from Haydn himself) is unique in its instrumentation which lends a particular atmosphere to the whole piece. The piece is scored for two English horns (cor anglais) about which it is said that it is neither English, nor a horn. The music you might recognise Deutschlandlied, the German national anthem - and Austria's before that - was originally Haydn's patriotic anthem written for Emperor Francis II, Gott erhalte Franz.
