He is the last Imam recognized by both Ismaili and Twelver Shi'a schools. Imam Ja'far as-Sadiq was born in Medina on the 17 of Rabi ul-Awwal in the year of 82 Hijra. His father was the 5 th Imam Muhammad Baqir (a.s.) and his mother was Umm Farwa. It is said that Ja'far as-Sadiq was born circumcised.

He was the Shaykh of great Shaykhs, the teacher of Imam Abu Haneefa, Imam Malik, Abu Yazid al Bastami and Wasim ibn Atta.
