Naples is a rough-around-the-edges city that offers visitors a glimpse into a more authentic side of Italy. While it has a reputation for being a bit chaotic and gritty, the city is actually a beautiful and fascinating place to visit. Is Naples worth visiting? That would be a yes. Naples is generally the southern Italian city that people transit through on their way to the archaeological ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and to the Amalfi Coast, and the picture postcard city of Sorrento. I have to admit that we did just that a few years ago. Prepare for sensory overload. Loomed over by the brooding Mount Vesuvius and with a reputation as more than a little rough and ready, Naples is sometimes omitted from the standard tourist itinerary. However, those that skip Italy's third-largest city - or just use it as a springboard for exploring the glamorous Amalfi Coast - are missing out. Founded by Greeks in the first millennium BCE, Naples is one of the most ancient cities in Europe - and it remains alluring to this day. Situated on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, with Mt Vesuvius towering in the distance, Italy's third-largest city is home to an incredible wealth of art and architecture.

I was there a few weeks before writing (or, should I say, re-writing) this post, and I was struck by how exciting and unique it still seemed to me. This is in spite of the fact that nearly a decade passed between my two visits to the city, a decade that has seen me visit nearly 100 countries. Whereas Naples may not be as visually exciting as Rome, as glamorous as Milan or as picturesque as Florence, the city offers a truly local. Is Naples worth visiting? 🍕🌋 For most travelers that like a non-Disney version of travel the answer is yes. However, the heat of the city is brutal in August and I would not recommend it.
